Synthetic Biology Consultant
Key Role:
Support program managers at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the development of new program concepts, management of a diverse active project portfolio, and transition of cutting-edge research to end-users. Work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment as a scientific and technical advisor with expertise in synthetic biology, genetic circuit design and modeling software, design-build-test-learn automation platforms, high throughput screening and selection systems, and cellular computing. Leverage a breadth of expertise to assess technologies across a broad range of applications and work with world-class scientists to drive research efforts forward for the development of advanced biological technologies to support the client's operations and improve the readiness of our warfighters. Provide strategic assessments of new technologies in support of the organization's goals, create technical reports, present findings, track technological progress, analyze technology program plans, and perform other related tasks required by the client. Assist with the preparation of briefing materials for government R&D efforts and deliver high-quality work products to support projects.
Basic Qualifications:
5+ years of experience with research in synthetic biology, including time as a graduate student
Experience authoring technical papers, reports, or program plans for both technical and non-technical audiences
Ability to show multiple first author contributions to peer-reviewed papers or patents
Ability to explain and present complex scientific concepts to a broad audience
Ability to obtain a Secret clearance
Doctorate degree
Additional Qualifications:
2+ years of experience with postdoctoral academic or industrial research
Experience applying engineering principles to biological systems, including design and implementation of novel genetic circuits and devices, modeling cellular communication using information theory and signal processing, and engineering of metabolic networks and consortia
Ability to show a publication record demonstrating rigorous evaluation of testable hypotheses and an understanding of statistical methods required for multivariate data analysis
Possession of excellent scientific writing skills
Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills
Secret clearance
Doctorate degree in Synthetic Biology, Biological Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field with strong emphasis on designing and modeling engineered biological systems

Salary at Booz Allen is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual’s particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $67,700.00 to $154,000.00 (annualized USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of Booz Allen’s total compensation package for employees.
