Job Description
Key Role:
Apply engineering physics, engineering mathematics, and materials science principles to support the design, analysis, manufacturing, or maintenance of mechanical and optical systems. Work with a broad range of technologies in fields such as optics, fiber optics, photonics, laser technology, and opto-mechanics. Perform optical-mechanical design, development, prototype building, and product lifecycle development. Perform trade studies based on bounded or unbounded problems considering customer requirements, budget, period of performance, and size, weight, and power constraints. Oversee product development, including review and approval of opto-mechanical drawing packages. Present design outputs to internal or external stakeholders, write or document optical design reports, and improve form-factor, performance, ruggedization, and operability of hardware. Collaborate and interface with scientists, nonscientists, and business leadership to innovate new concepts. Design and develop new products or solutions for customized manufacturing, and assist in transitioning designs to pre-production or low-rate phases of the product development lifecycle. Interface with external vendors or supply chain partners to find optimal engineering solutions. Apply advanced consulting skills and extensive technical expertise, including full industry knowledge. Develop innovative solutions to complex problems. Work without considerable direction, and mentor and supervise team members.
Basic Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience developing and individually contributing to laser, LIDAR, or optical-mechanical systems, including both free space and fiber coupled optical components or programs
- 4+ years of experience with prototypes and developing photonic or optical systems
- Experience in optical design and tolerancing using mechanical engineering software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Zemax
- Experience selecting and performing trades studies on materials deployed in optical systems
- Ability to conceive pathways from laboratory systems to engineered prototypes and account for environmental variables such as mechanical vibration or temperature, to ensure robust optical system performance
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Ability to learn and grow in a dynamic engineering environment, and adapt to evolving technical needs
- Ability to travel up to 15% of the time
- Ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance
- Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics
Additional Qualifications:
- Experience interfacing with machinists to ensure CAD designs are prepared for fabrication using industry best practices
- Experience using software for data analysis and modeling of optical systems, including Mathematica, MATLAB, COMSOL, and Python
- Knowledge of radio frequency (RF) hardware
- Possession of excellent analytical, problem-solving, and teamwork skills
- Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills
- TS/SCI clearance
- Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics
