Blindness Rehabilitation Specialist

Key Role:

Coordinate resources and services that support the needs of visually impaired and blind veterans, service members, and their families. Support the client's mission and goal to maximize independence and quality of life, and serve as a resource for the individual and family, or caregiver to comprehend visual impairment and associated clinical outcomes and available resources across the DoD, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), including civilian health care sectors. Maintain responsibility of a resource center that serves as a comprehensive educational and functional resource for veterans, service members, and families. Provide education and educational materials on available low vision and blind rehabilitative resources. Provide information and advice on how to obtain such resources. Provide information and support on navigating heath care systems and benefits, including VA benefits. Provide demonstrations of assistive technologies and other low vision tools to the patient and family or caregiver.

Basic Qualifications:

-Experience working with the low vision services and rehabilitation field

-Knowledge of vision impairment and blindness

-Knowledge of VA Blind Rehabilitation Services and specific types of services offered

-Knowledge of low vision technology and device functionality

-Ability to provide demonstrations and recommendations

-Ability to obtain a security clearance

-BA or BS degree

Additional Qualifications:

-Experience working with other military health organizations, including Centers of Excellence

-Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams of clinicians, rehabilitation specialists, case managers, including others to optimize delivery of services

-Experience with speaking or publishing for the vision rehabilitation field

-Experience with leadership in relevant professional societies, including the Associate of Vision Rehabilitation Therapists

-Knowledge of the eligibility and enrollment requirements for VA benefits to receive blind rehabilitation services

-ACVREP, CLVT, and COMS certifications preferred
