Optical Engineer/Scientist

Key Role:

Assist a Navy client with planning, designing, preparing, and conducting continuous wave or pulsed laser experiments to advance the state-of-the-art or increase the knowledge and comprehension of laser systems and components, laser propagation, and laser or material interactions or phenomena. Design, build, integrate, and test optical and laser systems. Assess laser and optical systems, components, test equipment, and technologies and provide recommendations.


Basic Qualifications:

-7 years of experience with laser systems, including fiber laser technology, academic or industry research in recent laser technologies, and the integration of laser systems

-Experience with major components of a laser system, including the optical train

-Experience with high energy laser (HEL) weapon systems, including elements, such as laser systems with gain media, pump sources, thermal management, and control systems, opto-mechanics, including custom design and fabrication, specification and operation, high power optical coatings, substrates, characterization and specification, beam shaping, including passive beam clipping, coring, and collimization, and beam control, including active and closed loop beam steering and phase control

-Experience with analyzing the effectiveness of HEL interactions with materials and components and experimentation, including modeling and characterizations of laser performance in relevant military environments and ranges

-Experience in laboratory work with lasers and optical systems required

-Knowledge of major components of a laser system, including the optical train, laser propagation theory, design of experiments, and laser interactions with materials and systems

-Ability to design and run laser experiments to support research, operate test equipment, including optical test equipment, such as power meters, photo-diodes, detectors, interferometers, wavefront sensors, spectrometers, and beam profilers, write technical reports, design, build, integrate, and test optical and laser systems, assess laser and optical systems, components, test equipment, and technologies, and provide recommendations

-Secret clearance

-BS degree in Engineering, Science, or Technology fields, including Physics, Optics, or Lasers


Additional Qualifications:

-Experience with electro-optics and the development and test of electro-optic sensors as it applies to the overall integration into a high energy laser weapon system, tracing interface documents from optics sensor to user interface of a weapon system and optical system design and engineering trade analysis, and image processing for object tracking and detection, recognition, and identification preferred

-Knowledge of adaptive optics preferred
-Ability to perform imaging and single cell detector specification and characterization, radiometric prediction, and testing and data analysis for imaging applications preferred

-MA or MS degree preferred
