Software Engineer, Senior

Key Role:

Perform software engineering and coding support for METOC models and applications to update existing models and applications to use modern tools, languages, and interoperate within Cloud-based service providers and the existing client operational environment. Operationalize and recode existing functionality of models and applications using standardized Cloud-based tool sets, particularly containers, into Cloud-based applications targeted for the METOC operational environment, including all technical documentation in SOPs, wikis, and user manuals and the integration environment, including the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Continuous Integration Environment (CIE). Integrate, test, and document updates to existing models and applications to meet CS and interface requirements for complementary Navy projects and programs, particularly Navy Integrate Tactical Environmental Subsystem-Next (NITES-Next) and Primary Oceanographic Prediction System (POPS). Integrate capabilities with existing geospatial applications, particularly GeoServer and Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), METOC and climatology products, and Commercial Joint Mapping Toolkit (CJMTK) and integrated stored information system data. Collaborate and coordinate efforts to integrate containerized applications with peer groups in DoD, other federal, and commercial companies facing similar challenges in high performance or operational computing. Provide demonstrations, briefs, and updates to the client team, representatives of complementary Navy projects and programs, and client operations department personnel on updated functionality and user interfaces. Provide and maintain accurate and complete documentation of all client software update efforts. This position is located in Monterey, CA.


Basic Qualifications:

-3+ years of experience with software programming in object-oriented and scripting languages, including Java and JavaScript

-1+ years of experience with coding for Linux systems and Linux-based Web architectures

-1+ years of experience with supporting, maintaining, and documenting software functionality

-1+ years of experience with software design

-Experience with Cloud-based computing environments

-Secret clearance required

-BA or BS degree in CS, Information Systems, Physical Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or IT or 6+ years of experience with IT in lieu of degree


Additional Qualifications:

-5+ years of experience with software programming in object-oriented and scripting languages, including Java and JavaScript

-4+ years of experience with coding for Linux systems and Linux-based Web architectures

-4+ years of experience with supporting, maintaining, and documenting software functionality

-3+ years of experience with programming applications to run in a Web environment, comprised of Apache, Tomcat, and JBoss

-3+ years of experience with programming GI&S applications using Java in a Web environment

-3+ years of experience with software design

-2+ years of experience with task and project management to ensure accurate scoping of tasking while meeting timelines for the execution of each task

-1+ years of experience with Cloud-based computing environments including container technologies such as Docker

-1+ years of experience with GIS and meteorology concepts

-Experience with high performance computing environments

-Experience with object-oriented and functional programming at scale or Cloud and GUI design and development

-Experience with working on DoD programs, specifically Navy programs

-Knowledge of secure coding practices, including STIGs

-Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills
