Technical Writer/Editor, Senior

The Challenge:

What if you could use your technical writing skills to improve the technology supporting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)?

Work as part of a team helping the VA monitor high-priority incidents affecting major IT systems. The team provides high-level technical support to facilitate resolving the problem and gathers information on the problem status and resolution steps to report to VA senior leadership. They also track and analyze after-event root cause analysis reports to identify trends and patterns in problems and resolutions.

As a technical writer and editor, you will be responsible for serving as a reporter on high-priority incident calls to record the activities that occur on the calls and summarize the current situation status for reporting to leadership. This role may also be responsible for reviewing and editing the work of other reporters on the team and generating daily and bi-weekly summary reports for internal VA distribution. The information delivered in these reports will help shape improvements in the management and delivery of systems and services throughout VA.

The day-to-day life of a technical writer and editor on the team includes:

  • Tracking and recording high-level technical discussions regarding system outages within VA
  • Working with technical triage team members to ensure the accuracy of recorded information
  • Delivering summary reports of call activity in a timely manner
  • Cross-training in the editor role to be able to fill in to review the work of other reporters, as needed
  • Assisting with producing daily, bi-weekly, and other status reports and briefs for senior leadership

Your technical writing expertise will be vital as you evaluate work. You’ll develop your communications skills through reporting on enterprise level triage and incident resolution. Use your abilities to improve VA enterprise reliability and improve the quality of services provided to the nation's veterans.
