Laser Engineer and Scientist

Key Role:

Research, design, analyze, build, integrate, and test laser and optical systems in laser weapon systems and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) electro-optical systems, leveraging expertise in different laser and optical approaches, algorithms, requirements, and dependencies. Analyze the development of laser weapon and ISR requirements from operational requirements, including output power, beam quality, jitter, atmospheric compensation, camera requirements, size, weight, prime power, and cooling. Research applicable technologies and analyze the development of plans and the building and integration of laser and ISR systems, including laser sources, fast steering mirrors, optics mountings, telescopes, sensors, sensor mounts, exit windows, optical benches, and gimbals. Design, develop, test, and document internal and external interfaces and evaluate options to achieve requirements, including operating in stressing environments, survivability, maintainability, reliability, and operability. Conduct jitter, finite element, thermal, stress or strain, and packaging analysis and design issue resolution, as needed. Assist with component or material selection and predictions of laser and environmental effects on materials and structures based on thermal loading, including developing requirements and designing optomechanical layouts for all optical components from concept to hardware. Develop and apply advanced optical engineering design methods, theories, and research techniques to the investigation and solution of complex and advanced problems.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience with HEL systems

  • 5+ years of experience with armed services EO systems research and development programs

  • Experience with high energy laser system research, development, or deployment

  • Experience in analyzing the effectiveness of HEL interactions with materials and components, laser propagation theory, and experiment, including modeling and characterizations of laser performance in military environments and ranges

  • Experience with working in an integrated product team (IPT) to support multi-organization requirements

  • Knowledge of high energy lasers or advanced optics and laser component topology, construction, and operation

  • Ability to advise on the planning of and implement tasks to support the client's experimentation objectives

  • Secret clearance

  • Bachelor's degree

Additional Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience with high energy laser systems, including fiber laser technology, in academic or industry research in recent laser technologies, such as integration of laser systems

  • 5+ years of experience with U.S. Navy EO systems research and development programs

  • Experience with major components of a laser system, including the optical train

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, or a related technical field preferred

Clearance:

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; Secret clearance is required.
