Synthetic Biology Consultant

Key Role:

Support program managers at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) or the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Health (ARPA-H) in the development of new program concepts, management of a diverse active project portfolio, and transition of cutting-edge research to end-users. Work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment as a scientific and technical advisor with expertise in synthetic biology for materials science, scalable solutions for biomanufacturing and healthcare, or bioelectronics for sensing and harvesting energy. Leverage a breadth of expertise to assess technologies across a broad range of applications to work with world-class scientists to drive research efforts forward for the development of advanced biological technologies to support the client's operations and to improve the readiness of our warfighters. Provide strategic assessments of new technologies to support the organization's goals, create technical reports, present findings, track technological progress, analyze technology program plans, and perform other related tasks required by the client. Assist with the preparation of briefing materials for government R&D efforts and deliver high-quality work products to support projects.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience with research in biomedical engineering, molecular biophysics, synthetic biology, or microbiology, including time as a graduate student
  • Experience with authoring technical papers, reports, or program plans for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to display multiple first-author contributions to peer-reviewed papers or patents
  • Ability to explain and present complex scientific concepts to a broad audience
  • Ability to commute to Arlington, VA
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance
  • Doctorate degree in Molecular Biophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, or Microbiology

Additional Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience with postdoctoral academic or industrial research
  • Experience in materials science and engineering, biomanufacturing, or bioelectronics
  • Experience with supporting federal government program management
  • Experience with publication record, including rigorous evaluation of testable hypotheses
  • Knowledge of statistical methods required for multivariate data analysis
  • Possession of excellent scientific writing skills
  • Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Secret clearance

Salary at Booz Allen is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual’s particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $96,600.00 to $220,000.00 (annualized USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of Booz Allen’s total compensation package for employees.
