Liaison Officer Linguist, Mid

Key Role:

Provide English-Japanese linguist services, including translation and interpretation, in support of bilateral engagements, presentations, meetings, and conferences in order to effectively and accurately facilitate communication between the U.S. Marine Corps and Japan host-nation stakeholders and US-Japan alliance counterparts. Bilaterally coordinate the translation of documents and scripts for informal and formal bilateral engagements, such as meetings and conferences. Research and advise on local culture and protocol consistent with the philosophy, principles, methods, and techniques endorsed by the Department of Defense, facilitating engagements between leadership and US-Japan alliance stakeholders in support of the client’s mission. Conduct analysis and translation of public Japanese media reports to inform the client’s readiness goals and objectives. Review, analyze and translate official correspondence. Assist in administrative tasks to include planning and calendar coordination for daily activities, including travel coordination and visits involving official alliance counterparts.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience with exercise translation and interpretation support

  • Experience in military translation and interpretation

  • Experience with military staff and its protocol

  • Experience with program or project management principals, process improvement, and mission planning

  • Ability to show a score of 3 or higher on the DLPT in the Japanese language

  • Ability to work with senior level staff members at the USFJ, Joint, Combined, MARFOR, MEF, MCIPAC level

  • Knowledge of Japanese culture, including Japanese military organization and how U.S. Forces integrate with partner military

  • Ability to correctly interpret and apply policy guidance, governing directives, and commander's intent to perform independent, unsupervised work

  • Secret security clearance

  • HS Diploma or GED

Additional Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force structure and employment

  • Knowledge of directives and parameters under which subordinate, adjacent and higher organizations must operate

  • Knowledge of DoD networks for information gathering, including NIPR and SIPR

  • Ability to clearly communicate and translate complex data analysis topics to senior leaders and their respective staff

  • Ability to utilize MS Office software for translation purposes

  • BA or BS degree
