Semiconductor Photonics Research Consultant

The Challenge:

What if you could use your scientific and engineering skills to inform advanced research projects in high-power lasers for next generation defense applications? As a photonics scientist, you understand the power inherent in harnessing novel devices, integration, and scaling concepts for optical systems of transformative capability. That knowledge is key when it comes to assisting the DoD with strategic consulting on new technologies to improve performance of optical systems.

On our team, you’ll get the opportunity to work with world-class scientists and engineers to impact national security investment through the development of cutting-edge technologies for military applications. You will leverage your technical expertise to support senior DoD decision makers with the strategic evaluation of new concepts and assessments of technological gaps in need of investment. You’ll support our customer’s mission by providing recommendations on the feasibility and potential impact of future research programs by preparing in-depth analyses, conducting background research, traveling to R&D facilities, and interfacing with the R&D community. You will directly impact our warfighters’ capabilities by working closely with government clients to track and evaluate the progress of sponsored research and communicating technical findings to a wide audience. This position is located in Arlington, VA and requires occasional travel to various CONUS locations for up to 25% of the time.

You Have:

-2+ years of experience with semiconductor photonics R&D in a professional or graduate-level research environment
-Experience with laser diode design and fabrication

-Knowledge of optoelectronic devices, including operating principles, key characteristics, and design and test methodologies

-Ability to travel to CONUS locations for up to 25% of the time

-Ability to obtain a security clearance

-BA or BS degree in Engineering and 10+ years of experience with engineering

Nice If You Have:
-Experience with ASIC design and manufacturing
-Experience with one of more of the following: coherent power combining, optical phased arrays, or high-power laser systems
-Experience with beam control and directed energy systems

-Experience engineering performing or supporting government-sponsored R&D programs

-Experience in collaborating with multiple organizations on government-sponsored research activities

-Knowledge of thermal management considerations of semiconductor lasers

-Knowledge of one or more of the following: 3D semiconductor integration, photonic-electronic integration, or advanced device structures

-Ability to commute to Arlington, VA

-Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills

-Active Top Secret clearance

-MA or MS degree in Physics, EE, Optics, Physical Sciences, or a related field preferred; PhD degree in Physics, EE, Optics, Physical Sciences, or a related field a plus
