Microbiology Consultant

The Challenge:

We're looking for a skilled microbiologist subject matter expert to help drive advancements in functional microbiomes to support research programs for the DoD. As a senior scientist engineer, you understand the challenges in engineering and assembling microbial communities and are familiar with many of the systems microbiomes impact from physiology to surface drag and corrosion. Candidates should have strong technical writing skills and the ability to communicate complex scientific ideas to broad audiences along with an understanding of physiology, genetics, microbiology, and Synthetic Biology. That experience and knowledge is key when it comes to supporting high-risk, high-reward projects that seek revolutionary change beyond the state-of-the-art.

As part of our team, you'll serve as a strategic technical consultant for an advanced government-funded research and development agency, building and managing programs that help revolutionize the world. You’ll work with world-class scientists and engineers for a DoD client to impact national security investments through the development of cutting-edge technologies. You’ll leverage technical expertise to provide strategic assessments of new technologies in support to senior DoD decision makers. You’ll maintain responsibility for producing and presenting findings and recommendations to a team of colleagues and clients on the feasibility and potential impact of future research programs, assisting with the management of current programs, and facilitating the transition of program deliverables to DoD stakeholders. This position is a hybrid role with a combination of working at a Booz Allen office or client site and working remotely.

You Have:

  • 5+ years of experience with research in Microbial Ecology and Microbiomes, Synthetic Biology, Microbiology, or Genetics, including time as a graduate student

  • Experience with authoring technical papers, reports, or program plans for technical and non-technical audiences

  • Ability to explain and present complex scientific concepts to a broad audience

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance

  • Doctorate degree

Nice If You Have:

  • 2+ years of experience with postdoctoral academic or industrial research

  • Experience with engineered microbial communities, gut-brain axis, biofilms, sequencing and metabolomics, pathogenic bacteria, biosafety and biosecurity

  • Experience with technical project or program management

  • Ability to display multiple first-author contributions to peer-reviewed papers or patents

  • Possession of excellent scientific writing skills

  • Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Secret clearance

  • Doctorate degree in Microbial Ecology, Neurology, Synthetic Biology, Microbiology, Genetics or related field
