Space & Microgravity Synthetic Biology Consultant

Key Role:

Work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment as a scientific or technical advisor at the intersection of biomanufacturing and extreme environments with experience conducting research in the areas of synthetic biology, novel chassis organism engineering, and biological based manufacturing of critical molecules in space and extreme environments in support of a DoD agency. Utilize a breadth of expertise to assess technologies across a broad range of applications to work with world-class scientists to drive research efforts forward and to develop synthetic biology approaches, novel chassis organisms, and biological platform based manufacturing for extreme environments to improve readiness of our warfighters. Provide strategic assessments of new technologies to support the organization's goals, create technical reports, present findings, track technological progress, develop technology program plans and perform other related tasks required by the clients. Assist with technical program management, program development, and briefing materials for government R&D efforts and delivered high-quality work products to support projects. Offer solutions and new ideas and identify opportunities to grow an existing business or support firm-wide initiatives. Interact regularly with clients and present work products to clients. Prioritize deliverables and work independently with little guidance. This position is located in Arlington, VA.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience with research in molecular biology, biochemistry, synthetic biology, bioengineering or microbiology, including time as a graduate student
  • 2+ years of experience with research in space and microgravity, including time as a graduate student
  • 5+ years of experience with authoring technical papers, reports, or program plans for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to display multiple first-author contributions to peer-reviewed papers or patents
  • Ability to explain and present complex scientific concepts to a broad audience
  • Ability to commute to Arlington, VA
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance
  • PhD degree

Additional Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience with postdoctoral academic or industrial research
  • Experience with the development and testing of biomanufacturing platforms, including optimization of microbial fermentation and downstream processing and utilization of synthetic biology approaches to develop non-traditional chassis organisms.
  • Experience in gene editing, synthetic biology, extremophile engineering, autonomous platform design for operation in microgravity or extreme environments
  • Experience with biosafety and biosecurity
  • Experience with science and technology policy
  • Experience with providing direct support to a Program Manager in development of a new start program and the source selection process.
  • Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, including scientific writing skills
  • Active Secret clearance
