Biological Scientist, Senior

Key role:

Lead the design, innovation, and pilot of novel studies and methods by proactively engaging with project teams to define precise scientific questions that can be addressed with appropriately powered experimental designs. Develop new strategies for improving virus manipulation and analysis, standard operating procedures, and other methods. Conduct studies that help comprehend the molecular and cellular basis of the pathogenesis, host range restrictions, and transmissibility of influenza viruses. Prepare written reports, PowerPoint presentations, and other communications. Prepare reports, presentations, and papers for publication in scientific journals. Present technical expertise and comprehension to a broad audience and train junior staff.

Basic Qualifications:

-8+ years of experience in molecular biology or virology

-Knowledge of viral analysis

-Knowledge of Federal Select Agent Program regulations

-Knowledge of genetic manipulation, including DNA and RNA purification, cloning of genes, and other manipulations in various plasmid vectors, viral, and bacterial hosts

-Knowledge of virus purification from cell culture or other hosts, biochemical and biophysical analysis of virus particles, and virus antigen quantification

-Knowledge in Biosafety Level 2 and Biosafety Level 3 laboratory studies

-Ability to show strong publication record

-Ability to draft and prepare written reports, PowerPoint presentations, and other communications and preparation of reports, presentations and papers for publication in scientific journals

-Ability to obtain security clearance

-PhD degree

Additional Qualifications:

-Experience with influenza viral strain identification and characterization preferred

-Experience developing, implementing, and enforcing the Select Agent Regulations

-Experience with managing public health and federal scientific partnerships, including in the area of vaccine development and surveillance preferred

-Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills

-Public Trust clearance

-PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Virology, or related disciplines
