Computation Biologist/Bioinformatics Scientist, Mid

Key Role:

Develop diagnostic methods for rapid and confident identification of infectious diseases using conventional sequencing and new next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. Develop bioinformatic sequencing pipelines with a keen knowledge of both wet and dry NGS methodologies. Examine the qualitative factors in DNA or RNA isolation, sequencing, bioinformatic filtering, and genomic assembly and targeting and recognize how the entire NGS pipeline effects the validity and robustness of strain identification. Prepare written reports, Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, and other communications. Prepare reports, presentations, and papers for publication in scientific journals. Present technical expertise and knowledge to a broad audience and train junior staff.

Basic Qualifications:

-3+ years of experience with bioinformatics, mathematics, biological sciences, or computer science

-Experience with UNIX and Linux systems, including HPC environments

-Knowledge of programming techniques in Python or JavaScript

-Knowledge of machine learning and statistical techniques, including hypothesis testing and software used in comparative or epidemiological analysis, such as SAS or R

-Knowledge of the creation of SQL and NoSQL databases and datasets by working closely with lab scientists and statisticians

-Ability to obtain a security clearance

-BA or BS degree

Additional Qualifications:

-Experience with working on influenza viral strain identification and characterization preferred

-Public Trust clearance

-BS degree in Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, CS, or related fields preferred; MS degree in Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, CS, or related fields a plus
