Aircraft Design Process Engineer

Key Role:

Support new and ongoing research and development contracts by applying fundamental structural analysis techniques to the multidisciplinary design optimization (MADO) of air vehicle concepts. Support structural design software development for aerospace components and systems to improve efficiency, durability, or affordability. Integrate structural design and manufacturing requirements in multidisciplinary analysis and design optimization (MADO) software tools for aircraft conceptual design. Develop aerostructural optimization, multi-fidelity finite element analysis (FEA), aerodynamic and inertial load sets, stress-based design requirements, manufacturability design requirements, structural weight estimation methods, surrogate modeling, and structural geometric representations appropriate for use in conceptual and preliminary design. Support research teams in the investigation and analysis of aircraft systems to further comprehend the effects of different aircraft structures technologies in an operational context for subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speed regimes with the objective of developing methodologies for the early assessment of novel air vehicle concepts and technologies.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience with setting up and using optimization frameworks for aerospace structural design, analysis, and fabrication using MADO software and techniques using OpenMDAO or ModelCenter
  • Experience with object-oriented programming using MATLAB, Python, C, or C++
  • Experience with finite element analysis software using ANSYS, MSC Nastran or Abaqus FEA
  • Experience with aerodynamic analysis using AVL, XFOIL, FUND3D or OpenVSP
  • Experience with computer-aided design using SolidWorks or Engineering SketchPad
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance
  • MA or MS degree

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience with aircraft structural layout and sizing
  • Experience with composite materials design
  • Experience with manufacturing and design techniques and procedures
  • Experience with creating and using advanced data visualization methods to show data relationships
  • Experience with the Air Force Research Laboratory
  • Secret clearance
  • PhD degree
