Aircraft Research Engineer

Key Role:

Support research teams in the investigation and analysis of aircraft systems to further comprehend the effects of different aircraft structures technologies in an operational context for subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speed regimes. Organize and lead teams to optimize structural layout and structural sizing for conceptual and preliminary level designs of aircraft components with an awareness of the impact that subsystem placement and aero-elasticity can have on structural design. Provide guidance, comment, review, and management assistance in the design of aerospace structural concepts. Apply knowledge, training, and experience to provide guidance and develop MATLAB codes that call upon solvers, including Nastran and Astros to augment existing first order Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization (MADO) air vehicles that incorporate structural analysis and aerodynamics. Integrate features, including design and manufacturing considerations to better estimate vehicle weight.

Basic Qualifications:

-5+ years of experience with aerospace structural design, analysis, and fabrication from the aerospace industry

-Experience with finite element methods and aerostructural life cycle analysis tools, including SolidWorks, PATRAN and NASTRAN, ABAQUS, ANSYS, or MATLAB

-Experience with structural layout, structural sizing, and detail-level design of aircraft components

-Experience with applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing to detailed design to control part form, fit, function, and cost

-Experience with mechanisms, including Doors, landing gear, and control surface integration 

-Experience with manufacturing and design techniques and procedures

-Experience with aircraft fabrication, assembly, and test processes

-Experience with mechanical design program cost and material estimation

-Ability to obtain a security clearance

-BA or BS degree

Additional Qualifications:

-Experience with aircraft design certification to military Aircraft Structural Integrity Programs (ASIP)

-Experience with computational fluid dynamics analysis or analysis of fluid-structural interactions

-Experience with composite materials design and using probabilistic finite element analysis

-Experience with design tooling for composite fabrication

-Experience with the Air Force Research Laboratory

-Experience with business development or marketing

-Secret clearance

-MA or MS degree
